Newborn Care Checklist: Must-Haves for Baby’s First Weeks

Doctro checking the child health on clinic.

The first few weeks with a newborn are full of awe, questions, and very little sleep. It’s completely normal to feel both excited and overwhelmed as you settle into your new routine. At Sunshine Pediatric Partners in Saginaw, Michigan, Dr. Yvonne Pacquing and Dr. Melissa McNier want to help you feel confident and supported as you embark on newborn care. Whether you’re preparing your nursery or packing a diaper bag, here’s a helpful checklist to guide you through the essentials.

Feeding Essentials

Whether you’re breastfeeding, formula-feeding, or a combination of both, feeding your newborn often takes up a big part of the day and night. Make sure you have:

  • A comfortable space for feeding (chair, pillow, burp cloths)
  • Bottles and nipples, if using formula or pumping
  • A breast pump and milk storage bags, if breastfeeding
  • A water bottle and snacks for yourself—you’ll need the energy

Diapering and Hygiene

Newborns go through a lot of diapers. You’ll also want gentle products that protect their sensitive skin:

  • Diapers (newborn size and a few in the next size up)
  • Unscented baby wipes
  • Diaper cream or ointment
  • A safe changing area
  • Baby bathtub and mild baby soap
  • Soft washcloths and towels

Clothing and Sleepwear

Keep it simple and soft. You don’t need a full wardrobe, just enough for frequent changes:

  • 6–8 onesies or bodysuits
  • 4–6 sleepers or gowns with easy diaper access
  • Socks or booties
  • Swaddling blankets or wearable blankets (avoid loose bedding)
  • A hat, especially if it’s cool indoors or out

Safe Sleep Space

A safe sleep setup is an essential component of newborn care. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends room-sharing without bed-sharing for the first several months, so your Saginaw, Michigan pediatricians recommend:

  • A firm, flat crib or bassinet mattress with a fitted sheet
  • No pillows, blankets, bumpers, or toys in the crib
  • A baby monitor, if helpful for your peace of mind

Health and Wellness Basics

A few key items can help you manage the day-to-day needs and keep track of your baby’s health:

  • Digital thermometer
  • Baby nail clippers or a soft file
  • Nasal bulb syringe or suction device
  • Infant acetaminophen (ask your Sunshine Pediatric Partners providers before using)
  • A record of feedings, diapers, and sleep, such as a notebook or app
